Testimonials
“This autobiography is a riveting profile in courage from the first Black justice on the Oklahoma Supreme Court, someone who has and
continues to lead a triumphant life that matters. His journey from segregated Sapulpa to outstanding jurist is a true inspiration.
This moving account should be required reading in schools—and everywhere else.”
—William Bernhardt, Bestselling Author of 60+ Books
“The history of Oklahoma is not always pretty. Sadly, there was shameful mistreatment of African Americans, Native Americans, and other minorities. In this book, Justice Colbert relates his own personal journey through the barriers of discrimination and unforgiveable
treatment. Fortunately, he had the fortitude to overcome those hurdles and advance to the top of the legal profession as
justice of our state’s highest court. Throughout his story, he carefully and superbly documents the events of his life
that constitute a microcosm of our history. In addition, he preserves for history his significant
contributions to a large body of law that will affect future generation.”
—Bob Burke, Constitutional Lawyer and Author
Tom Colbert, the first Black Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court, descends from generations of marginalized, long-suffering
people: a great-great grandmother born into slavery; a great grandfather enmeshed in the fight for Black rights within the
Muscogee (Creek) Nation. His life story reminds us of the remarkable arc of our racial history and the fluidity of any
given point on that arc. Sometimes it seems we take two steps forward and one step back. Always, though, we
must keep on stepping. Justice Colbert’s memoir, Fifty Years from the Basement to the Second Floor,
evokes a theme that resonates universally: succeeding against the odds. He is living proof
that, more often than we may think, all things are indeed possible.
